Chapter Fifteen

Trusty Automotive was on the outskirts of town. Compared to Chad’s garage, Trusty was modern and had a full-service gas station I used frequently. I recalled the center being built about ten years ago, bringing with it the addition of fast-food restaurants I thought we could do without. In my opinion, it wasn’t just better for business if people came into downtown Bookend Bay to eat; it was better for overall health to eat the more wholesome food provided by our restaurants.

And visiting the bakery every once in awhile was good for the spirit.

With the truck parked, I popped open the box of treats Toni had set on the console when she’d gotten in the truck. She’d been baking all morning, looking for a healthier variety of cheesecake.

“So, what makes these cheesecake bars healthier than the usual?” I asked her. If we didn’t get her a job soon, I’d need to go for a walk three times a day. Resisting was impossible. I picked up a bar and took a bite. Mmm, silky smooth with the flavors of blueberries and cinnamon.

“I substituted Greek yogurt for some of the cream cheese,” she said. “What do you think?”

“Marginally healthier, but who cares? They’re crazy good.” I finished it off.

“I think I see Sean.” Toni pointed to a picnic table set off to the side of the station under a canopy. “Looks like Kim is here, too.”

“Good, we can stealthily interrogate Kim as well.” Considering that Toni was related to the woman accused of killing Kim’s brother, I felt a little apprehension over how we’d be received. Perhaps if we came bearing sweets. “Maybe they’d like dessert.”

“That was my thought,” said Toni, picking up the box.

We got out of the truck and walked over to join them.

“Hey, Sean, Kim,” Toni said. “This is a nice surprise. It’s good to see you guys.”

“Hello, ladies. Nice to see you, too.” Kim’s tone was friendly, which eased my trepidation. Because the sun was directly behind us, she shaded her eyes and stood. “I just dropped off lunch for Sean. His father and I just joined the yacht club. We have a food allowance we have to spend every quarter, so I figured we’d spend some on Sean today. Curry was the lunch special, and it’s his favorite.”

“Wow, nice stepmom,” I said, thinking it had been a long time since I’d brought lunch to my adult kids, if ever. Maybe I should do that once in awhile.

Sean smiled and put down his fork. “The best. And appreciated. Kim spoils me for sure.”

I caught the aroma of coriander, cumin, and cardamom. Whatever Sean was eating smelled delicious. “Smells like a good curry,” I said.

“It is, but it’s not as good as Kim’s curries,” said Sean. “She learned the differences in the regional cuisines and prepares dishes from Western India where my mother was raised.”

Kim really was an attentive, considerate stepmom.

“It’s a hobby of mine,” Kim said. I noticed the dark circles under her eyes. Having just lost her brother, it must be difficult to sleep.
